Bournemouth Borough Council Post Offices Meeting

Straight off the plane this afternoon and down to the Town Hall to attend a meeting of the Developing Communities and Tackling Crime Scrutiny and Review Panel. The meeting was about the Post Office closure programme in Dorset and a number of councillors and members of the public attended.

I'm delighted to report that a motion deploring the closure programme was passed by the panel unanimously. They also called for Bournemouth Council to approach Poole and Christchurch to organise a joint approach to any proposed closures, starting with Bournemouth offering support to Poole over their opposition to the closure of the Post Office at Adastral Square, Canford Heath.

The motion now goes to Bournemouth's Cabinet for their approval and action.

A pleasing development. Is there any word if the matter will come before East Dorset DC? About three or four years ago a sub-post office about three hundred yards down the road from my home was closed for no apparent reason. Now tens, if not hundreds, of residents have to travel into town to queue for far too long in the main post office. This has no doubt impacted on the lives of the elderly, and not to mention those with mobility issues. To add insult to injury, the bloody postbox was also removed from the sub-post office site!

The Tories and the other parties are just plain hypocritical on this and playing to the gallery to win votes. This is happening because of the EU and they are just impotent by-standers who can do nothing about it.

That's a typical UKIP comment if ever I saw one.

'It's all the EU's fault, therefore we should leave'.

It may well be the EU's fault, or at least their anti monopoly policies have a considerable hand in it.

That's no reason for us not to fight to save our post offices and to fight in Europe to overturn their ridiculous rules.

To suggest that everything's the EU's fault and therefore trying to oppose local issues like this is pure cowardice. That's what UKIP display as does this post in my opinion.
